I know Brenneman and Lyons loved it, but I hated to see Sammy try to stretch his 9th inning 1 out no-on single against Sheffield tonight. It didn't end up mattering, but it could have.
I tried to break it down like this:

1. Safe at 2nd
Man on 2nd with 1 out. Scores on a single+. Moves over to 3rd (little change) after sacrifice, infield single, etc.

2. Out at 2nd (happened)
None on with 2 out. As if he hadn't gotten a hit at all.

3. Safe at 1st
Man on 1st with 1 out. Scores on a double+. Moves over to 2nd (into scoring position) after sacrifice, infield single, etc.

All things being equal, I'd rather take #3 than gamble on #1 or #2. This is especially true given Sheffield's fielding ability, get to the ball speed, and arm, as well as the shallowness of the hit (short throw).
