Here is a letter I sent to Instapundit about this story:

The Zeyad story said how they were tied up, then pushed over the dam. The story doesn't say anything about being untied first, and if the soldiers were trying to kill them, I would assume that they wouldn't untie them. However, the son's cousin was apparently able to try to save the son (a hero!). Perhaps he was able to untie himself while dangling from that branch. To try to save the son, the cousin would no doubt have had to brave the cold water, which apparently would have killed him even if he could swim, but somehow it didn't.
I guess we shouldn't expect all the details, but something about that sequence doesn't seem right.
