Bats

When I saw this story, I immediately thought that the school should have sent out an email like UT did on 10/2/03:

Recently a student on campus touched a dead bat that was later diagnosed as rabies positive. The student is currently undergoing post-exposure rabies prophylaxis (³rabies shots²) for preventative treatment.

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and the Office of the Vice President for Employee and Campus Services (ECS) want to remind you that Austin has a significant bat population, and though they're really cute--they should NEVER be touched.

If you find a live or dead bat in a building or a live bat that can not fly outside, please call Environmental Health & Safety¹s Animal Make Safe program at 471-BATS (2287).

For more information about bats on campus, please visit http://www.utexas.edu/safety/ehs/bulletin/batsrabies.html.
